Basingstoke and Deane Council gets a 'Fat pipe'
Moving-edge is the ISP relied on to connect the council systems to the Internet and also to the councillors’ homes.
Having won a public tender, in March 2003, Moving-edge has moved swiftly to provide the resilient Fibre connection with up to 100Mbps of connectivity available. "Giving an organisation such as the council a connection for all their employees and servers was a project we were confident in our ability to provide" said Richard Grimwood Technical director of Moving-edge. "We worked very hard to bring the links in ahead of schedule and were delighted when the rigorous testing schedule was signed off in July 2003". Moving-edge also had to provide the council with a back up circuit that would pick up within 5 Minutes. Under testing it was demonstrated to resurrect their presence on the Internet within 8 seconds. This combined with back up DNS, web and mail services helps ensure a continuation of services for a council at the forefront of e-enabled local government services
Having given the council a "Fat" Internet connection implementing a broadband Virtual Private Network to replace expensive ISDN connections was the next logical step. Using nationally available Moving-edge ADSL connections has seen this project rollout to over 40 councillors in under a month..
Years of experience
"To my mind the years of experience within our company of building successful VPNs really showed. The underlying infrastructure has to be completely understood to get the return on investment that our customers expect." commented Alex Studd managing director. He went on to say the interest from other organisations wanting to replicate this industry leading connectivity has been very pleasing. “It is a great showcase of how to provide both enterprises and their home workers an effective and secure environment".
