Piertopier.net 27 June 2003 PIERTOPIER.NET ANNOUNCES WIFI ON BRIGHTON BEACH.
Piertopier.net is a community initiative aimed at bringing WiFi internet access to Brighton Beach and beyond. On 27th June 2003 we announced a public beta test of our service, providing free (-as-in-beer) internet access to a stretch of the beach at Brighton between the two piers. The beta test period is expected to help us judge user demand, and to better prove the technologies we are using. Piertopier.net isn't simply a WiFi access point providing a hotspot, but is utilising mesh networking to allow a more organic growth of the network. Based around Locustworld.com's Meshbox package, and using captive portal technology from Nocat.net, Piertopier.net aims to extend the network over the next year.
Piertopier.net is seeking to utilise the best in open source and community networking technologies to provide a wireless internet infrastructure, and will make available configuration and customisation details of the network following the beta test period, to assist other groups to build similar infrastructures.
